After a whirlwind Christmas morning, in which we abandoned the traditional highly-regulated “okay, you open one…now I’ll open one…” for a full-on stocking-emptying free-for all, we bade farewell to our house elves (Nana & G’Dad) and headed off to the airport by 11:30 for our first leg of the trip.
A short hop to Washington, D.C. Just long enough for lunch, and to watch Britt’s coworker (Juveria) crush it in round three of the current Jeopardy Tournament.
Exciting start!
It wasn’t long before we were settling in for Tasman’s most highly anticipated part of the trip…14 consecutive hours of movies.
After impulsively clicking the flashing blue button to “upgrade to premium seating” so many months ago, the dream was finally being realized.
Get comfy.
The oversized seats, and Britt’s cornucopia of sleeping pill options, made the long journey rather tolerable.
The kids showed their appreciation to the crew by leaving behind matching "gift bags" following our descent into Cape Town.
We linked up with our driver,
And after a door-to-door travel time of 23h 18 min we arrived at the Lawhill Luxury Apartments, our first-ever African accommodations!
We wasted no time heading to the local grocery store, stopping en route to absorb a few local sights from the V&A Waterfront area,
Before stocking up on essential provisions.
It was 20:00 SAST (13:00 EST) before we managed to muster for our first dinner.
An open-air spot on the Waterfront, where the kids celebrated with duelling half-pound make-your-own steak tartares…
Taz went with the standard, but Ciel splurged on the 10 ZAR (~0.75 CAD) for the wagyu. High roller.
Off to bed now, hoping our sleep deprivation allows us to fall sleep for 7h (16:00 -23:00 EST) and still wake up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for tomorrow’s adventures…we’ll be fiiiiine.

Well, I am so happy you took my advice and to blog this trip. Looks like you are off to a fantastic start! Everyone looks happy and I know Taz would be in heaven with 14 hrs of movies. I am actually surprised he got off the plane!! Have fun and I can hardly wait for more posts. 😊 🦒
